Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Tear stale bread into small, bite-sized pieces and place in a greased baking dish.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk or cream, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and allow to soak for about 15 minutes.
  5. If using, sprinkle raisins or currants over the soaked bread and dot with butter.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let cool for a few minutes and drizzle with warm vanilla sauce before serving.
