- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Tear stale bread into small, bite-sized pieces and place in a greased baking dish.
- Whisk together eggs, milk or cream, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread and allow to soak for about 15 minutes.
- If using, sprinkle raisins or currants over the soaked bread and dot with butter.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean.
