Step-by-Step Instructions for Gourmet Baked Mac and Cheese
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Gather your ingredients and equipment.
  2. In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Add elbow macaroni and cook for 7-8 minutes until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter. Whisk in 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for about 2 minutes until golden.
  4. Gradually whisk in 3 cups whole milk, stirring until thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Add garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup each of sharp cheddar, Gruyère, and mozzarella cheese until fully melted.
  6. Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring gently until fully coated.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of panko breadcrumbs with 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons melted butter.
  8. Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
