Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line the bottoms of two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper and grease the sides.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one by one, mixing well. Then add sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients alternating with milk until no flour specks remain.
  6. Melt unsweetened chocolate with instant coffee and mix into half of the batter.
  7. Layer spoonfuls of vanilla and chocolate batters in the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Mix instant coffee with milk and beat softened butter and vanilla until airy, then gradually add confectioners sugar and melted white chocolate.
  11. Frost the top of one cake layer, stack, and apply a thin crumb coat before chilling.
  12. Frost the top and sides evenly with remaining icing for a smooth finish.
  13. Melt bittersweet chocolate and butter to draw a spider web on the frosted cake.
  14. Pipe small chocolate bodies and legs to create creepy little spiders on the web.
