  • 8 cups Water
  • 4 cups Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth Can substitute with vegetable stock
For the Flavor
  • 1 piece Smoked Ham Hock or Leftover Ham/Smoked Sausage
  • 1 medium Onion Diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic Minced
  • 1 can Canned Diced Tomatoes Add after beans are tender
For Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Chili Powder Adjust according to spice preference
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice Add after cooking
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 cup Diced Carrots Add in last 30 minutes
  • 1 cup Diced Celery Add in last 30 minutes

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Rinse the HamBeens® 15 Bean Soup Mix under cool running water. Place the beans in a large bowl, cover with water, and let soak overnight.
  2. In a large pot, combine 8 cups of water with 4 cups of reduced sodium chicken broth. Add the smoked ham hock if using. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 1 hour.
  3. After an hour, stir in the soaked and drained beans, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cover and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until beans are tender.
  4. Once the beans are tender, stir in the canned diced tomatoes and chili powder. Simmer uncovered for an additional 30 minutes.
  5. Add fresh lemon juice and the seasoning packet. Taste and adjust salt and pepper if needed. Simmer uncovered for another 10 minutes.
