Casserole Preparation
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray and arrange slices of stale bread in the dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk eggs, milk, pumpkin puree, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, gently pressing to absorb.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Prepare streusel by melting butter, then mixing with brown sugar and optional oats until crumbly.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), sprinkle streusel on top, and bake for 50 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serve with maple syrup or whipped cream.
