  • 1 cup Buttermilk (or Milk with Vinegar) Can be omitted for a lighter version.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • mixing bowls
  • slotted spoon
  • Thermometer

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by pressing and draining the false, or tofu/tempeh if using, to remove excess moisture. Cut it into bite-sized pieces, around 1 to 2 inches each.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Stir well.
  3. In a separate bowl, crack and beat the eggs until fully combined and slightly frothy.
  4. In another bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with dried oregano and thyme.
  5. Take each piece of the prepared false and dip it first into the seasoned flour, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it with the breadcrumb mixture.
  6. In a large skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by about ½ inch and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully lower the breaded protein pieces into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. In a small bowl, combine freshly chopped parsley, basil, and lemon juice to create the herb infusion.
  9. To serve, drizzle the zesty herb infusion generously over the crispy fried pieces.
